Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United States of America, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Friday.
“Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the United States of America. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the MEA said in a statement posted on its website. Kawtra will succeed Taranjit Singh Sandhu who left his position in Washington earlier this year.
Kwatra, a career diplomat with over three decades of experience, earlier served as the Foreign Secretary of India. Kwatra, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988, previously served as India’s envoy to Nepal. His diplomatic career includes notable postings such as Ambassador of India to France from August 2017 to February 2020.
During his tenure, Kwatra has developed extensive expertise in relations with India’s neighboring countries, the United States, China, and Europe. He also served as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office from October 2015 to August 2017. In a July 14 post on X, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar thanked Kwatra for his dedication and many contributions to India’s foreign policy.
“Thank outgoing Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra for his dedication and many contributions in the field of foreign policy and national security. Particularly in the last decade, he has helped strategize and execute so many of our key policies. Wish him well in his future endeavors,” Jaishankar said in an earlier post.
In response, Kwatra wrote, “Grateful to EAM @DrSJaishankar for his remarkable leadership, mentorship, and firm and constant support. He has led Team MEA to deliver on the nation’s expectations in a period of global tumult. Signing off with immense gratitude.”
