Passengers travelling on the Purple Line of the Bengaluru Metro faced inconvenience recently, when a technical glitch prompted the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to suspend services between MG Road and Baiyappanahalli stations.
The disruption occurred at around 9:20 am on Saturday, bringing metro connectivity to a standstill.
The BMRCL swiftly responded, announcing that train services would be temporarily unavailable for an hour between MG Road and Baiyappanahalli due to the technical snag. Presently, trains were only operational between MG Road and Challaghatta, as well as Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield (Kadugodi).
A BMRCL spokesperson expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers, stating, “Disruption in Metro rail services on the purple line. Due to a technical snag, train services will not be available for a period of one hour between MG Road & Baiyappanahalli. Inconvenience caused is regretted,” as reported by Indian Express.
AS Shankar, the Executive Director of Operations and Maintenance at BMRCL informed The New Indian Express that the delay in restoring operations was attributed to the time taken to identify the source of the problem. Due to the holiday weekend, the trains experienced lower ridership.
Unfortunately, a total of 20 trips, ten in each direction, could not be operated as a result. Initially, there was optimism that the issue could be promptly rectified. However, given the time it took to identify the problem, BMRCL took proactive measures by alerting BMTC to operate buses from MG Road to mitigate the inconvenience caused to passengers.
According to a report from Hindustan Times, a power outage was identified as the cause of the disruption. The power tripped at 9.15 am on Saturday, leading to a circuit breakdown. Engineering teams promptly intervened, successfully restoring power by 11 am, allowing services to resume as usual. During the interruption, BMRCL arranged buses through the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) for affected passengers.
The power outage specifically occurred between Indiranagar and Halasuru metro stations, causing a temporary halt in services on the Purple Line.
In a separate development, metro services on the Green Line, specifically between Peenya Industry and Nagasandra stations, were temporarily suspended from January 26 to January 28. This suspension was attributed to commissioning works for the extension line beyond Nagasandra to Madavara. Normal services on the Green Line, from Nagasandra to Silk Institute metro stations, resumed today, January 29, from 5 am onwards.
