Central Railway is stepping up its game to improve passenger facilities and tackle issues faced by women commuters.
In a new partnership with DMart Foundation, the focus is on enhancing sanitation at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) railway station.
According to Free Press Journal, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Mumbai Division of Central Railway and DMart. This agreement will see upgrades and maintenance of toilet facilities at CSMT over the next five years as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The latest upgrade, completed and opened on July 20, 2024, includes significant improvements in the ladies’ toilet block and gents’ urinal area in the suburban concourse. The ladies’ block now features 14 new toilets (7 Indian-style and 7 Western-style), including one accessible for Divyangjan, while the gents’ urinal block has been equipped with 41 urinals.
New toilet blocks have been installed at three key locations: Platform No. 18 (near the waiting room), the mainline concourse, and the suburban concourse. Each block is equipped with an advanced exhaust system to keep unpleasant odors at bay. Additionally, 35 cleaning staff are on duty round the clock, thanks to DMart Foundation’s dedicated team, ensuring top-notch maintenance and hygiene.
CSMT is a major hub on the Mumbai Division/Central Railway, handling both suburban and long-distance trains. With seven suburban platforms and eleven long-distance platforms, the station sees over 1.1 million passengers daily.
This collaboration is expected to address and reduce passenger complaints about restroom facilities, enhancing the overall experience and ensuring a cleaner, more comfortable environment at one of India’s busiest railway stations.
