From compact hatchbacks to robust SUVs and family-friendly sedans, India’s automobile market has a diverse range of vehicles, and the demand for the SUV segment is driving high in India.
The competition in the Indian automobile industry is fierce, but few vehicles consistently outperform the rest, cementing their positions as the best-selling cars in India.
As mentioned earlier, the market share of the SUV segment is increasing, particularly at the cost of the hatchback segment, which has been ruling the domestic market for a very long time now.
Once again, it has been crowned the largest-selling car in the country for the third consecutive year in FY24. Any guesses?
Yes, it is the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. Starting with a price tag of Rs 5,54,500 that goes up to Rs 7,37,500 (ex-showroom), the beast on wheels was India’s best-selling car in FY24, selling 200,177 units. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR was also the best-seller in FY23 (212,000 units) and FY22 (189,000 units), as reported by India Today.
The only direct rival in the automobile market is the Tata Tiago. The Maruti Wagon R model has long been a leading choice in India, and in its third generation at present, it comes with two engine options: the 1.0-litre K10C petrol (67 PS and 89 Nm) and the 1.2-litre K12N petrol (90 PS and 113 Nm).
Both engines feature 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions. There is also a CNG option (57 PS and 82 Nm) for the 1.0-litre K10C petrol engine, which is coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox with no AMT.
The automobile giant’s success can be attributed to its family-friendly design, timeless aesthetics, and dependable mechanics. The WagonR is built on the fifth-generation Heartect platform, like various other Maruti Suzuki models. The popular hatchback has safety features including ABS with EBD, ESC, and hill-hold.
In FY24, the hatchback segment had a dip to 27.8 percent of the domestic market, while the SUV segment increased to 50.4 percent. With sales of 4,229,566 units, India surpassed China and the United States to become the third-largest automobile market globally in FY24.
In addition to that, it was also the first time in a fiscal year that the wholesales had crossed the significant milestone of 4,000,000 units.
