Mumbai: Some of India's leading brand were seen competing for 'Awaaz Consumer Vote Awards 2006' launched by TV channel Awaaz in partnership with ICICI Bank.

The awards, supported by The Indian Express Group, were given in New Delhi on Tuesday following a survey conducted by research firm AC Nielsen-ORG MARG spanning 40 service and product categories in 21 locations with about 10,000 people participating in the survey.

Awaz Consumer Awards 2006:

  • The most preferred tourist destination Outside India - Switzerland.
  • Air India and Indian Airlines were declared the best International and best Domestic Airlines respectively.
  • Airtel was adjudged the most preferred Cellular service provider.
  • LG was the most preferred brand for TV and personal computers while among Refrigerators it was Godrej that won.
  • SBI was adjudged both the best housing loan as well as the most preferred bank.
  • Among auto loans ICICI was considered better.
  • Maruti 800 and Hero Honda Splendour were the best brands for the Indian roads.

This is the second year that these awards are being given out. "The product list has expanded from 22 categories last year to 40 to include paints, tourism and travel and lifestyle retail," says Sai Kumar, CEO of TV 18 Media.

Categories included financial services, FMCG, consumer durables, telecom and auto. It was ensured each of the categories under study had a fair representation in conjunction with their market penetration.

The research objectives were to arrive at a list of the 'most preferred brands' as perceived by the end-consumers and to know the drivers of choice for a brand in the category and performance of the brands.

The large-scale quantitative research exercise was carried out in 21 centres across 14 states. AC Nielsen interviewed male and female adults in the age group of 20-60 years, belonging to SEC A, B and C households.
