DoT agrees to mobile operators' plea
The DoT is understood to have agreed to mobile operators' plea for extending the deadline for subscriber verification process.

New Delhi: The Department of Telecom is understood to have agreed to mobile operators' plea for extending the deadline for subscriber verification process till March 2007.

Although officially nothing has been communicated to the operators on extending the deadline, which expired last month, DoT is believed to have agreed with their request to extend it till March 2007 as it feels the operators are doing their bit to overcome the problem of fraud connections.

With the mobile subscriber base touching 111 million and 5-6 million users being added every month, operators had sought time for extension of deadline to check the existing connections.

Even if there is no written assurance from DoT operators also have taken it to have been extended to March 2007 in the absence of any reminder to meet the deadline.

There will be no change in any other terms and conditions of the directive issued by the government in May. The maximum amount of Rs 50 crore penalty per circle also remains in case of violation of verification norms.

When contacted, mobile operators said they will be submitting undertakings to the DoT in the next three to four days for 100 per cent document verifications for future connections like – photograph, proof of identification among others which will help the police track down the culprits.
