IBM launches twin initiatives in Chennai
IBM will the launch of its global "re-inventing education" programme in collaboration with the Chennai Corporation.

Chennai: Global computer major IBM on Thursday announced two major initiatives in Tamil Nadu - the opening of its fourth facility in this city and the launch of its global "re-inventing education" programme in collaboration with the Chennai Corporation.

The new facility in Chennai will enable IBM to scale its existing application services and global services delivery centre to meet growing client demand, IBM India's managing director Shankar Annaswamy said.

The new facility will be operational in early 2007 and shave the capacity to house 3,000 employees.

IBM Foundation president Stanley Litow, who was present at the press conference, said the firm's "re-inventing education" programme, was launched in the country on Thursday with Chennai Corporation teachers getting trained in the national objectives of education reform.

It will focus on raising the standard of education in the country.

The programme, which had already been launched in 11 countries, including the US and China, has trained one lakh teachers in China alone and one lakh more elsewhere.

In India, IBM technologists and teachers will develop curriculum suited to local needs without compromising on universal standards, he said.

The company has earmarked six billion dollars for investment in India and the two programmes will cost $two billion, Litow said.
