In UP, Railways Fines Passengers Rs 82,000 For Travelling Ticketless And Smoking In Toilets

Passengers on an Indian Railways train were fined twice for attempting to evade ticket checks during a routine inspection at Kosi Kalan station, Uttar Pradesh. As the inspection team boarded, several passengers without tickets tried to avoid detection by moving to the rear coaches or hiding in the toilets. The inspection was part of a larger effort to crack down on ticketless travel across multiple trains.

The trains inspected included numbers 12964, 04967, 04419, 14211, 18238, 12138, 11906 and 11841. During the inspection, many passengers hiding in the toilets decided to smoke cigarettes. This action did not go unnoticed. The smoke started to seep out, catching the attention of the ticket inspector (TT).

Suspicious of the smoke, the TT knocked on the toilet doors. When no one responded, the TT called the Railway Protection Force (RPF) for assistance. After some difficulty, the doors were opened. To the team’s surprise, they found several passengers smoking inside the toilets. Smoking is strictly prohibited on trains, making this a serious offence.

The passengers faced penalties for two violations: travelling without tickets and smoking on the train. As a result, they had to pay double fines. The TT collected the fines and released the passengers.

Prashanti Shrivastava, Public Relations Officer for the Agra division, reported that the total fines collected during the operation amounted to Rs 82,360. This included Rs 41,170 from 124 passengers travelling without tickets, Rs 37,790 from 100 passengers travelling without proper authorisation and Rs 3,400 from 32 passengers for littering or smoking.

Indian Railways is conducting a campaign against ticketless travel to ensure safety and compliance. The incident at Kosi Kala station highlights the importance of following rules and regulations. It acts as a reminder to all passengers to travel with proper tickets and avoid prohibited activities on trains. This raid aims to discourage such behaviours and maintain a safe and orderly travel environment for all.
