The agricultural sector is one of the most important sectors of the Indian economy. According to Union Agriculture Minister, Arjun Munda, the agriculture sector contributes 15 percent to the GDP of India in FY 2022-23. The central government has also introduced numerous policies and incentives for the farmers. When the people are moving towards the industrial secretary, Geeta Devi in Bihar has resorted to traditional farming to earn a handsome income. She earns around Rs 5,000 per day by selling her self-grown vegetables to vendors or the market. She has two bighas of land on which she grows various vegetables like brinjal, green chillies, bottle gourd, safflower greens, and tomato.
Geeta Devi hails from Dandari block of Begusarai district of Bihar. While talking to News18, she said that she got the inspiration for cultivating vegetables after watching a program on the Annadata channel on TV. She said that during that time, vegetable farming was shown as a source of good income for women. “It was shown how good income can be obtained by cultivating many types of vegetables simultaneously in the same field. Taking inspiration from this, she started cultivating green vegetables in three plots of two bighas, that is, 40 katha each,” said Geeta Devi. She further said that she only cultivates vegetables in her land.
While explaining her business of farming, Geeta Devi said that in the morning people call many nearby markets to know the price of vegetables. After this, they send the vegetables to those markets in the city or nearby markets where they get higher prices. According to Geetha, most of the hard work goes into the cultivation of brinjal. She said that approximately Rs 500 is spent daily on vegetable cultivation. However, the selling price of these vegetables compensates all the investment. The vegetables are often sold at Rs 3000 to 5000 per day. As per Geeta Devi, vegetables like tomato, lady’s finger, and brinjal are currently available at good prices in the market. She said that the price of tomatoes is more than Rs 40. The inclination of farmers in the district has now moved towards tomato cultivation.
