Mumbai: The market ended in red on profit booking. The Sensex was down over 63 points. The CNX Midcap was down over 44 points. Capital goods, metal, banking, technology, oil, auto, and FMCG stocks lost ground. However, pharma stocks ended higher.
The Sensex settled at 10,841.35 after swings 151 points for intraday, down 63.85 points or 0.59 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 10,935.09 and an intraday low of 10,784.42.
The Nifty ended at 3240.15, down 22.15 points or 0.68 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 3267.95 and an intraday low of 3221.95.
The CNX Midcap Index closed at 4629.70, down 44 points or 0.94 per cent. It touched an intraday high of 4679.75 and an intraday low of 4606.40.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,181.70, down 0.91 per cent. The BSE Midcap Index closed at 5,042.32, down 0.89 per cent.
The market breadth was negative, about 737 shares advanced, 1757 shares declined, and 52 shares remained unchanged.
The total market turnover was at Rs 48277.09 crore. The NSE Cash turnover was at Rs 8786 crore. The NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 34609.08 crore. The BSE Cash turnover was at Rs 4882.01 crore.
L&T, Reliance Energy, Maruti Udyog, Hindalco, Dabur India, Jet Airways and SAIL were the biggest losers on the indices.
Dr Reddy's Labs, HLL, Tata Motors, Satyam, HPCL and BPCL were the biggest gainers on the indices.
Experts say that the correction could last for another 150-200 points.
The BSE Consumer Durables underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.49 per cent at 3,177.45 due to losses in Su-Raj Diamonds, Blue Star, Titan Industries, Samtel Color and BPL.
Capital goods stocks like Praj Industries, L&T, Aban LoydChiles, KEC Infrastructures, SKF India, Alfa Laval, Dredging Corporation, Alstom Projects and Bharat Electronics also ended lower. The BSE Capital goods Index closed down 1.44 per cent or 116.86 points at 8,011.16.
Metal stocks including Jindal Saw, SAIL, Hind Zinc, Sesa Goa, Hindalco and Nalco also finished in red. The BSE Metal Index closed down 1.10 per cent at 7,709.71.
The BSE Bankex closed down 0.86 per cent at 5,218.46 amid selling in Canara Bank, IOB, Bank of Baroda, SBI, Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank and ICICI Bank.
Technology stocks like MphasiS BFL, HCL Info, Wipro, Patni Computer, Infosys and TCS also slipped. The BSE IT Index closed down 0.61 per cent at 3,888.37.
Oil stocks including Gail, Reliance, Petronet LNG and MRPL also tumbled. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 0.57 per cent at 4,710.61.
The BSE Auto Index closed down 0.50 per cent at 5,245.27 as profit booking is seen in Cummins, Maruti Udyog, Punj Tractors, Amtek Auto, Hero Honda, MICO, Ashok Leyland, Bajaj Auto and Hind Motors.
FMCG stocks like Britannia, Dabur India, Nirma, McDowell and Colgate also witnessed selling pressure. The BSE FMCG Index closed down 0.09 per cent at 2,045.65.
However, pharma stocks like Dr Reddy's Labs, Cadila Health, Matrix Lab, Lupin, FDC, Cipla and Nicholas Piramal gained. The BSE Healthcare Index ended up 1.27 per cent at 3,677.69.
