Mumbai: It was a good close for markets as they ended near the highest point of the day. We started sticky on concerns over US markets but gained ground going ahead. Buying was seen in scrips across sectors.
Energy stocks like oil & gas, power, FMCG, auto and banking stocks closed in green. However, select metal and IT stocks under performed.
Broader markets also participated in the uptrend and both the midcap and smallcap indices were up over 1 per cent. Rupee was quoting at 40.96 against US dollar.
Top gainers on the indices are Reliance Energy, SBI, Ranbaxy, Grasim and HUL, Siemens, and HDFC.
Top losers on the indices are Hindalco, Wipro, Bharti Airtel, Zee Entertainment and TCS.
Sensex was up 170.16 points or 1.10 per cent at 15616.31, and the Nifty up 42.75 points or 0.96 per cent at 4518.60.
About 1809 shares have advanced, 1125 shares declined, and 85 shares are unchanged. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,848.68 up 75 points or 1.1 per cent.
The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,395.58 up 105 points or 1.3 per cent. The BSE Bankex closed at 7,992.29 up 2 per cent. Karnataka Bank, Andhra Bank, Oriental Bank, Bank of India, Yes Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.2 per cent at 13,588.78. Lakshmi Machine, Praj Industries, Triveni Engg, Bharat Bijlee, Siemens closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 2 per cent at 3,631.33. Ranbaxy Labs, Cipla, Biocon, Aurobindo Pharm closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,907.17 up 0.6 per cent. Hero Honda, Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor, Mah and Mah advanced.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 11,637.94 up 0.6 per cent. Shree Precoated, SAIL, Hind Zinc, NALCO, Tata Steel advanced higher.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 2 per cent at 2,003.11. ITC, GlaxoSmith Con, United Spirits, HUL, Bata India closed higher.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed flat at 8,155.11.
Reliance Petro , Reliance, Essar Oil, IOC ended in green. The BSE IT Index closed at 4,607.82 up 0.5%. Tech Mahindra, Satyam, Wipro, HCL Tech, Infosys closed higher.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9919.76 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 40927.51 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4647.25 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 55494.52 crore.
