Mumbai: The markets opened strong on the last trading day of the year 2006. Buying in the capital goods, bank and IT stocks gave support to the Sensex which gained 82.76 pointso quote at 13,929.10 in first five minutes of trade on Friday. The wide-based National Stock Exchange index, Nifty, gained 21 points at 3,991.55.
Major gainers in the opening trade were Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Rel Comm, NTPC, ICICI Bank, ABB, Siemens, BHEL, BPCL, SBI, Reliance Inds and Dabur.
However, Wipro, Bharti, NALCO, OBC and Zee were trading weak.
Marketmen said beginning of January contract in the Futures and Options (F&O) segment and expectations that corporates might come out with better third quarter results helped improve sentiments.
On Friday 26 new stocks got added in the NSE futures and options list. Few names as follows, Aban, Amtek Auto, Bajaj Hindustan, Balram Chinni, Bata, Bombay Dyeing, BEML, Crompton Greaves, GTL, ACC, HTMT, JP Associates, JSW Steel, Kotak Bank, Lupin, MCdowell, Praj India, Renuka Sugar, Sesa Goa, Triveni Eng, Voltas. Nissan Copper was a new listing in BSE on Friday.

- MFs net buy Rs 391.48 crore (Rs 3.91 billion) on December 27
- FIIs net sell Rs 1,022.55 crore (Rs 10.22 billion) in equity on December 28
- NSE F&O January series begins with Open Interest of Rs 38,170 crore (Rs 381.70 billion)
