Bank customers in several states of India should prepare for a series of holidays this week that may impact their banking activities. The schedule includes Buddha Purnima on May 23, Nazrul Jayanti and the 2024 general elections polling day on May 25, and the usual weekend break.
Buddha Purnima: States with Bank Closures
Due to Buddha Purnima, banks will be closed in the following states/UTs on May 23:
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Chandigarh
- Chhattisgarh
- Himachal Pradesh
- Jammu
- Jharkhand
- Madhya Pradesh
- Maharashtra
- Mizoram
- New Delhi
- Tripura
- Uttar Pradesh
- Uttarakhand
- West Bengal
Nazrul Jayanti holiday and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections
On Saturday, May 25, voting for Phase 6 of the Lok Sabha elections will occur in 58 constituencies spanning eight states and union territories.
According to RBI regulations, banks will be closed on May 25 (the fourth Saturday) and May 26 (Sunday).
While physical branches will be closed during these events, customers can continue to access online banking services without interruption. They can conduct transactions through bank websites, mobile applications, and ATMs as usual.
Bank holidays in May
Banks are closed for 14 days in May 2024, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list. Banks are closed in May for Maharashtra Din/May Day (Labour Day), Lok Sabha general elections 2024, the Birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya, Lok Sabha general elections 2024, State Day, Buddha Purnima and Nazrul Jayanti.
However, these holidays can change according to different states. RBI marks certain holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.
