Mumbai: The markets opened flat and were trading around the previous day's close for major pat of the day. But saw some buying coming in during the final hour of trade and closed with modest gains.
The Sensex closed at 11,619.52 up 47 points. The Nifty gained 15 points to close at 3401.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,868.32 up 36 points or 0.6 per cent.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,842.67 up 29 points or 0.6 per cent.
Most of the BSE sectoral indices closed in the positive terrain.
The BSE Metal Index advanced by 1.2 per cent at 8,483.23. Sesa Goa, Hindalco, JindalStainless, SAIL and Hind Zinc witnessed buying interest.
The BSE Capital Goods Index rose 1 per cent at 7,747.25. HEG, L&T, ABB and Alfa Laval closed higher.
The BSE Bankex was up 0.5 per cent at 5,240.50. UTI Bank, Karnataka Bank, Bank of India, Union Bank and Bank of Baroda moved upwards.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 0.85 per cent at 5,655.10. HPCL, BPCL, Kochi Refineries and Reliance rose higher.
The BSE IT Index was gained 0.3 per cent at 4,236.67. HCL Info, Moser Baer, Hexaware Tech and TCS gained on the bourses.
The BSE FMCG Index closed was up 0.3 per cent at 1,985.89. Shaw Wallace, HLL, Britannia and Dabur India closed in green.
The BSE Auto Index closed flat at 4,959.39. Hind Motors, Sundram, Bajaj Auto and Cummins were among the losers.
The BSE Health Care Index lost 0.3 per cent at 3,504.08.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 4822.43 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 18943.06 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2350.16 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 26115.65 crore.
