Mumbai: The markets finally moved up significantly after hovering around the flat line for major part of the day.
The Sensex closed above the 10,000 mark, for the first time since June 5, gaining over 150 points. The Nifty closed above 2,900 up 40 points.
Apart from the BSE Bankex all the BSE sectoral indices were trading in green. The BSE metal index emerged as the top performer followed by the auto index.
The major gainers on the indices were Tata Motors, ACC, Cipla, Maruti Udyog and MTNL.
The markets continued to witness volatile trades on alternate bouts of buying and selling in scrips.
At 1438 hrs IST, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark index, Sensex was trading at 9,917 up 32 points and the Nifty was trading flat near its previous close of 2,890.
About 1,351 shares advanced, 853 shares declined, and 80 shares remained unchanged.

Major losers on the indices
- Larson and Toubro, down 4.16 per cent
- Wipro down 2.3 per cent
- State Bank of India down 2.14 per cent
- Bharti Airtel down 1.7 per cent
Major gainers on the indices were:
- Tata Motors up 3.12 per cent
- Hindalco up 2.5 per cent
- Cipla up 2.45 per cent
- Grasim up 2.10 per cent
Market heavyweights:
- Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 215.75 down 0.21 per cent from its previous close of Rs 216.20.
- Reliance was trading at Rs 925.60 up 0.52 per cent from its previous close of Rs 920.80.
- Infosys was trading at Rs 2,831.50 up 1.08 per cent from its previous close of Rs 2,801.20.
- ITC was trading at Rs 161.70 down 1.07 per cent from its previous close of Rs 163.45.
Despite 955 points recovery on good buying support by foreign funds in the last two days of the preceding week, unfavourable global advices weighed negatively on the market.
On Wall Street last Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq Composite Index ended in the red while most of the Asian markets were down early this morning.
The markets opened on a flat note and gradually moved deeper into red.
Asian markets were trading mixed as Nikkei traded marginally in green, Straits Times lost nearly one per cent, while Taiwan stock market flattened out.
