Sensex on a new high at 9309
The Sensex touched an all-time high of 9309.01 on Wednesday and closed down over 20 points due to some profit booking.

New Delhi: The markets ended in the red today after a volatile and choppy session. The Sensex closed down at 22.14 points or 0.24 per cent at 9241.76. It touched a life-time high of 9309.01.

Losses were seen in capital goods, consumer durables, technology and oil stocks.

The Nifty closed down 7.75 points or 0.28 per cent at 2804.55. It touched an all-time high of 2825.65.

The CNX Midcap Index closed up 0.35 point or 0.01 per cent at 3972.75. It touched an all-time high of 4006.30.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed down 29.21 points at 5823.92. The BSE Midcap Index Closed down 15.25 points at 4367.14.

The market breadth was negative, about 878 shares advanced, 1548 shares declined, and 87 shares remained unchanged. The total market turnover was at Rs 38462.65 crore.

Gujarat Ambuja Cements, ONGC, IPCL, L&T, Grasim and ACC were the biggest index losers.

Hindalco, HDFC Bank, Dr Reddy's Labs, Ranbaxy Labs, Tata Steel, Sail, PNB and M&M were the biggest index gainers.

The volumes were higher in the NSE F&O segment. The turnover was at Rs 25,505.7 crore. The Nifty Futures discount narrowed down to 3 points. It added 6 lakh shares in Open Interest.

FIIs were net buyers of Rs 58 crore in F&O and Rs 15 crore in Nifty Futures on December 13.

The BSE Capital Goods Index underperformed the other indices. It closed down 1.60 per cent at 5630.10 amid selling in Alstom Projects, Lakshmi Machine, KEC International, L&T, HEG, Greaves Cotton, Crompton Greaves, Aban LoydChiles, BHEL, ABB, Ingersoll Rand and Praj Industries.

Oil stocks like ONGC, MRPL, Reliance, HPCL, IOC and Chennai Petroleum also tumbled. The BSE Oil & Gas Index closed down 1.23 per cent at 4278.03.

Consumer durables stocks including Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan Industries, Samtel Color, Videocon International, and Whirlpool also ended lower. The BSE Consumer Durables Index closed down 1.15 per cent at 3286.38.

The BSE IT Index closed down 0.89 per cent at 3605.75 due to losses in Hexaware Tech, Infosys, MphasiS BFL, Wipro, Patni Computer, Satyam and Moser Baer.

Several cement, hotel, media, paper, shipping, sugar and telecom stocks also lost ground.

However, the BSE Metal Index outperformed the other indices. It closed up 2.13 per cent at 6368.87 as buying was seen in Sail, Hindalco, Jindal Saw, Jindal Stainless, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel, Sterlite Ind and Hind Zinc.

Banking stocks like Canara Bank, UTI Bank, Allahabad Bank, PNB, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank, Oriental Bank, ICICI Bank, Andhra Bank, Bank of India, Union Bank, IOB and SBI also firmed up. The BSE Bankex closed up 1.97 per cent at 5065.12.

Pharma stocks including Nicholas Piramal, Matrix Labs, Ranbaxy Labs, Dr Reddy's Labs, Glenmark, Sun Pharma, Lupin and Wockhardt also ended higher. The BSE Healthcare Index closed up 0.65 per cent at 3123.30.

The BSE FMCG Index closed up 0.55 per cent at 1626.94 as FMCG stocks like Tata Tea, ITC, Shaw Wallace, Nirma and Nestle also moved up.

Select buying was also seen in auto and tea stocks.
