Aus vs WI: Steve Smith Set to Open Post David Warner Retirement as Australia Pick Matt Renshaw, Cam Green in Test Squad
Matt Renshaw and Scott Boland return to the Test squad while Cameron Green is confirmed to be part of the playing XI for the first Test

Australia announced a 13-member squad for the two-match Test series against West Indies starting January 17 at the Adelaide Oval, with Matt Renshaw returning to the Test squad alongside Scott Boland.

Chief selector George Bailey also confirmed that allrounder Cameron Green will get place in the playing XI, which could essentially mean he will be slotted in at No.4, the position he has had the most success in Sheffield Shield. That in turn would mean Steve Smith is now almost certain to move up the order and replace the retired David Warner to partner Usman Khawaja.

Ex-AUS Coach Says David Warner Isn’t One of the Greats: ‘People Who’ve Done Something Exceptional…’

“Cameron Green will come into the playing XI for the Test in Adelaide in a squad also containing Scott Boland and Matthew Renshaw,” Bailey said today. “We have selected a team we believe contains the best six batters in the country.

Even though Renshaw edged out Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft for a place in the squad, he will remain as the reserve opener. Both Renshaw and Boland will join the squad post their BBL commitments.

“Scott Boland and Matt Renshaw will join the squad prior to the first Test after playing for the Melbourne Stars (Jan 15) and Brisbane Heat (Jan 13) in the BBL.”

Steve Smith to lead in ODIs

For the ODI series starting February 2, Smith is back as the captain while Travis Head has been named his deputy. The World Cup winning captain Par Cummins alongwith Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Starc have been rested while Marcus Stoinis has not been picked for the series.

“It is a little over 12 months until the Champions Trophy and further opportunities for the likes of Aaron Hardie, Matt Short, Jhye Richardson, and Nathan Ellis will be valuable both to our ongoing improvement as a team and also further their personal experiences in ODI cricket,” Bailey spoke about the ODI selection said.

“The squad strikes a balance between players continuing to make their mark on international cricket, playing alongside some of our most experienced players with an eye to the future in this format,” he added.
