'From Super Over Double Against Kiwis to Double Super Over Against Afghans': Team India's Love Affair With Tie Breaker in T20I
Team India are no strangers to the super over by now, having played and won a couple of tiebreakers earlier after their games had ended in a draw.

Team Indian produced a stunning win over Afghanistan to pick up a 3-0 win in the three-match T20I series at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday after two Super Overs were required to determine the winner on the day.

Afghanistan matched India pound for pound, scoring as much as India did during the 20 overs to take the game to a tiebreaker, which also ended in a draw. India finally managed to dig out a win in the second Super Over as Rohit Sharma and Ravi Bishnoi starred with the bat and the ball respectively.

The memorable India’s tour of New Zealand in the year 202, included two games that had to be decided through a super over. And what makes it all the more interesting is the fact that the two instances transpired in back-to-back games.

On the 29th of January 2022, the men in blue clashed against the all-blacks at the Seddon Park in Hamilton as the game was tied after both teams made 179 runs each, and a super over was required to find out the result.

Rohit Sharma and Kane Williamson starred for their sides as they notched up 65 and 95 runs respectively for the cause of their sides as both units were evenly matched.

The game went into super over and the Kiwis managed to score 17 runs off the bowling of star Indian bowler Jaspirt Bumrah, who was handed the responsibility of bowling the crucial six deliveries.

But, Rohit made it a memorable day for the men in blue as he polished off the game with successive sixers in the final couple of deliveries in the enticing game.

This was the first time Team India were subjected to a super over, over a dozen years, 13 years to be precise, after the famous bowl-out win over Pakistan at the T20I World Cup.

If India had to wait for over a decade to witness a tiebreaker at Hamilton, they did not have to wait for over a couple of days for the instance to recur as the fixture between the Indians and the Kiwis at the Sky Stadium in Wellington there up yet another draw, and the game was subjected to yet another super over.

The matchup between India and Kiwis on the 31st of January 2020, part of the same series as the aforementioned tie, also ended in a tie after both sides were inseparable at the end of 20 overs at 165 runs on the board.

Manish Pandey’s half-ton and Bumrah’s sharp bowling ensured that the Indians would take the game yet another tie-breaker and return victorious, yet again.

Bumrah had turned things around and seemed to be in much more familiar territory as he contained the Kiwi batting lineup for 12 runs in the super over before Rohit, yet again led from the front with a six and a four in the opening two deliveries of the tiebreaker to break Kiwi hearts.

The Indian women’s team, which has gone through a sort of revolution lately, have also withstood the nervous test of a super over when they got the better of Australia at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on the 10th of December 2022.

The sides were level at 187 runs each at the end of the regular 20-over period and the winner had to be decided in a super over, a first for the Indian women’s side in the T20I format.

Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh were the stars on the day as they added 79 runs and an unbeaten 26 during a high-pressure 20 overs, before coming up with the goods yet again to take the super over away from the Australians with 20 runs in the decider.

The match was made even more special by the fact that India handed the mighty Aussies their first loss of the year 2022 with the victory in Mumbai as the Indian girls shone brightly.

Double Super Over, The Bengaluru Drama! India vs Afghanistan, 2024

The most recent and probably the most enthralling instances of a super over transpired at the M Chinnawamy stadium in Bengaluru as India and Afghanistan played out a blinder of a game.

The crowd who were lucky enough to flock into the stadium got their money’s worth as they got to witness not one, but two super overs.

India scored 212 runs in the regular 20 overs riding on a magnificent ton from Rohit, before Afghanistan matched their rival’s score thanks to the combined efforts of Rahmanullah Gurba, Ibrahim Zardan and Gulbudin Naib.

The fighting Afghans pushed the game to a super over, which also turned out to end in a stalemate as a second super over was called for.

Rohit, rose to the occasion yet again as he stood tall to put the ball away for a six and four in the opening couple of deliveries on the second time of reckoning before Bishnoi scalped two Afghan wickets to wrap up the game and the series in stunning fashion for the home side.
