New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson came up with a sensational performance against Papua New Guinea at the T20 World Cup 2024 on Monday, June 17. Ferguson picked up three wickets without conceding a single run in his four overs. With this, he became just the second bowler in T20I cricket and the first at a men’s T20 World Cup to bowl four maiden overs in a game.
Canada’s Saad Bin Zafar is the only other player who accomplished this feat. Zafar had bagged two wickets conceding no run in four overs against Panama in a T20 World Cup Americas Region Qualifier game in 2021. Ferguson’s sensational bowling impressed fans and former cricketers alike.
Ex-India cricketer Wasim Jaffer also reacted to Lockie Ferguson’s magical bowling, by sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter). Jaffer felt that Ferguson’s performance against Papua New Guinea was “right up there” with West Indies’ Sunil Narine bowling a maiden super over to Nicolas Pooran and Yuvraj Singh hitting six sixes in an over facing Stuart Broad in 2007 “in terms of rarity of achievement.”

“Even if it’s against an associate team, Lockie Ferguson’s 4-4-0-3 right up there with Sunil Narine bowling a maiden super over to Pooran and Yuvraj hitting six sixes in an over to Broad in terms of rarity of achievement,” Wasim Jaffer posted on X.

Winning the toss, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson decided to bowl first and the move turned out to be a correct one. Lockie Ferguson managed to make an instant impact as he claimed the wicket of Papua New Guinea skipper Assad Vala for 6 with his first ball. Ferguson’s sensational bowling helped New Zealand in bowling out Papua New Guinea for a paltry total of 78 in 19.4 overs.

Only three Papua New Guinea players managed to breach the double-digit mark. Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Ish Sodhi picked up two wickets each for New Zealand. The Black Caps, during the run chase, did not face much trouble as they reached the target with 46 balls to spare.
The game against Papua New Guinea also marked New Zealand’s final group-stage fixture of the T20 World Cup 2024. The Kiwis were knocked out after conceding defeats at the hands of Afghanistan and West Indies.
