All About Justice Hema Committee Report About Exploitation in Malayalam Film Industry
The Malayalam film industry, which is often praised for being progressive, has been hit by a scandal exposing the exploitation of women. In February 2017, a popular Malayalam actress came forward alleging abduction and sexual assault in Kochi. To look into the issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality in the industry, the Kerala government formed a committee in July 2017. The committee identified at least 17 forms of exploitation experienced by women working in 30 different categories within the industry and submitted a 295-page report to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan in December 2019.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue Collapse
Following the recent collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Rajkot fort in Malvan, Maharashtra, CM Eknath Shinde has ordered a joint technical committee. The committee consists of structural engineers, experts and officials from the state government and the Indian Navy. The committee is tasked with investigating the precise reasons behind the unfortunate incident and ensuring such incidences do not happen in the future. In addition, the CM has also directed the Public Works Department to create another committee consisting of top structural engineers, sculptors and technical experts from the Navy and the IIT to oversee the making of a new grand statue.
Centre Recommends Safety Measures For Medical Professionals
The RG Kar rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata has shaken up the entire nation. The case gained nationwide attention with widespread demand for a central protection law for healthcare professionals at the workplace. Now, the Centre has instructed all the states to take remedial safety measures and action within two weeks for the doctors. The health ministry has recommended several measures to enhance security and provide a safer working environment for healthcare workers, including the formation of internal committees on security, sexual harassment, and violence prevention.
Gujarat Floods
As heavy and incessant rains continue to pound Gujarat and flood-like situations prevail in parts of the state, PM Narendra Modi called up Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel to take stock of the situation. He also assured the Centre’s support to the state in tackling the natural disaster. The heavy rainfalls claimed the lives of at least 26 people within three days, and around 17,800 people were evacuated from flood-affected areas as heavy showers lashed parts of the state. On Wednesday, Devbhumi Dwarka district’s Bhanvad taluka received 185 mm of rainfall, the highest in the state. As per an official release, 24 rivers and 140 reservoirs and dams in the state were flowing above the danger marks.
