Banita Sandhu’s casting in the third season of Netflix’s Bridgerton came as a pleasant surprise for most Indians. Ever since the release of this season (on May 16), she has been sharing BTS images from the sets of the popular series. And recently, she took to Instagram to share a video of the cast grooving to Beyoncé’s Cuff It that instantly went viral. In the caption, she thanked Caleb Obediah – who plays Charles Cho – for getting everyone to move.
The video features Banita along with Claudie Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington), Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton), Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich) and others standing on a spiral staircase and matching steps. In an exclusive conversation with News18 Showsha, Banita, who plays Sita Malhotra in the latest season of Bridgerton, reacts to the viral reel.
“It was actually one of my last days on set and we were shooting a big ballroom scene,” she tells us. “There was a lot of waiting around for them [the crew] to set up and stuff. It got to a point where all the cast members were in the room and we were all like, ‘Let’s get off our phones and do something fun’.”
The October and Sardar Udham actor further adds, “One of our co-stars Caleb is a really good dancer. So, we were doing dance routines just for fun and to pass time. It was just three of us first and then more people kept joining in and before we knew it, we were doing the Cuff It challenge by Beyoncé on the staircase (laughs)!”
The reel also grabbed attention as fans quipped how Nicola was struggling to get her steps right and lauded Claudie for her impeccable moves. Commenting on it, Banita says, “Nicola did try and we’ll have to give it to her. I was also trying and I wasn’t that great. But Claudie just stole the show. She was up there! For every rehearsal that we did, she brought such great energy on set. No wonder that comes through her dance moves!”
In Bridgerton, Banita’s Miss Malhotra was primarily seen attending balls and promenading along with her mother and other spinsters. A while back, Nicola and Luke revealed that they enjoyed dance routines with many fans pointing out the complicated footwork. Quiz Banita about it and she shares, “I wouldn’t say it’s tough but it definitely takes a lot of time. The ballroom scenes that I was part of took anywhere between three to six days to shoot.”
She, in fact, divulges that shooting each ballroom sequence took about a week’s time. “That’s because there would be so much happening like different snippets of conversations that needed to be shot. Continuity was also a big factor as you needed to be exactly in the same place. I loved doing the ballroom scenes as that’s when everyone would be on set. There was such a great camaraderie between the cast and the crew,” Banita remarks.
