The actress started her career as a flight attendant. Later, she entered showbiz and made her debut with a 2003 film Inteha which failed to make a mark at the box office. Apart from this, she has appeared in several other films like 1920 Evil Returns, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara!, Yaara Silly Silly, Starfish and LUV Phir Kabhi, among so many others. It was her role as Vidya Sharma in the film Chak De! India which brought her immense fame and recognition.
Vidya studied law and worked as an air hostess. Her first husband, Captain Arvind Singh Bagga, was a pilot at Alliance Air. He died in 2000, when his flight, Alliance Air Flight 7412, crashed into a building in Patna. In 2009, she married Sanjay Dayma, who worked with Ashutosh Gowariker as a screenwriter and deputy director of the Oscar-nominated film Lagaan.
