As 2023 comes to an end, this year has been a great year for the saree. The six yards of sheer elegance have been experimented with with contemporary patterns while keeping the traditional beauty intact.
On the occasion of World Saree Day, which is observed on December 21, here’s a look back at how India’s finest fashion designers celebrated the drape and were adorned by renowned celebrities including Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Zendaya, Beyonce, Gigi Hadid, Karisma Kapoor and Sanya Malhotra.
From gowns to suits, the saree blended perfectly with each silhouette and made an everlasting statement in 2023.
Rani Mukerji in Masaba
The House of Masaba, is known for thinking outside the box and exploring age-old techniques with a fresh take. Fashion designer Masaba Gupta recently designed a custom-made saree for the OG Queen of Cinemas, Rani Mukerji. The Black Son Chidiya Saree Gown, crafted in crepe, came with a deep V neckline and an attached drape with side slits. The monochromatic silhouette was enhanced with Masaba’s signature sonchiya embroidered motif, adding glimmer to Rani’s overall look.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas in Amit Aggarwal
Who can forget the iconic saree adorned by global superstar Priyanka Chopra Jonas at the opening of the Nita Mukesh Ambani Convention Centre in Mumbai? Designed by renowned fashion designer Amit Aggarwal, the statement ensemble was crafted by pairing a 60-year-old vintage Banarasi brocade saree made using silver threads and gold electroplating on khadi silk. The highlight of the saree was that it was draped over and structured with a jewel-toned, moulded body made of unique, crafted material and paired with a signature holographic bustier.
Beyonce in Gaurav Gupta
The world saw it when Beyonce walked on stage in Gaurav Gupta’s neon green Athena saree. Sculpted to perfection, Beyonce adorned the tribute to the Indian silhouette as her opening look in Atlanta at the Renaissance Tour. The statement piece from Gaurav’s Hiranyagarbha collection, which he presented at Paris Couture Week AW 23/4. The ethereal chiffon drapes with orbiting satin sculpting were a piece of art from the world of Gaurav Gupta.
Zendaya in Rahul Mishra
The surreal Verdure saree gown styled by actor Zendaya exuded Indian princess vibes at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Convention Centre launch ceremony. The contemporary version of the saree, beautifully executed by couturier Rahul Mishra, is part of Cosmos’ Indian festive 2023 collection. The 3D hand-embroidered floral designs are the highlight of his magical navy blue tulle saree. Zenday paired the saree gown with the one-of-a kind flying crane bralette, a signature style from Rahul Mishra.
Gigi Hadid in Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla
The beautiful combination of the slim chikankari skirt and chikan saree drape designed by couturiers Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla accentuated supermodel Gigi Hadid’s stunning personality. In India to attend the Nita Mukesh Ambani Convention Centre launch, Gigi’s saree drape looked divine on her. The chikankari was exquisitely hand-embroidered by artisans at the designer duo’s atelier in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Crystals and sequin highlights and bold, gold Zardozi borders on the drape added ethereal elegance to Gigi’s overall look. The spectacular ensemble was paired with a Kamasutra-inspired, South Indian temple jewellery cropped sleeve jacket blouse edged with bold tassels. A masterpiece fit for a goddess.
Karisma Kapoor in Manish Malhotra
Giving the quintessential saree a Manish Malhotra twist was this powerful scarlet suit saree. Karisma Kapoor graced the runway at Manish Malhotra’s showcase at the New Order of Style fashion extravaganza hosted at the launch of Jio World Plaza. Dressed in the shimmery and vibrant suit saree, a new entrant in the Manish Malhotra world, the ensemble featured a set of flared pants attached to a sheer pallu and a bold bralette. The glamourous silhouette was paired with a captivating jacket, adding the perfect ‘boss vibes’ to Karisma’s look.
Sanya Malhotra in Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna
Sanya Malhotra, who was recently spotted at a wedding, won hearts with her dance moves. But there was one more thing that stole the show that night, and it was the dazzling draped saree designed by designer duo Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna. The RGRK Astine stripe saree is adorned with crystal and sequin embroidery, which gives the illusion of a classic nine-yard drape. The pre-stitched silhouette is fuss-free and makes for a perfect contemporary Indian wedding look this season
