Manchester: Daniele De Rossi could quit Roma for Manchester City this summer unless the Italian side offer him a bumper new contract and assurances about the club's ambitions, Goal.com has learned.

The midfielder's current deal expires in 2012 and Roma run the risk of losing him on a free transfer next year unless he receives a substantial pay rise and a clear outline of new owner Thomas DiBenedetto's plans for the club.

Roberto Mancini's side are ready to put together a 20.3 million pounds deal to secure De Rossi's signature, and they are prepared to offer him a significant salary increase.

De Rossi would agree to sign a contract extension with Roma should he receive the certainties he craves and the club are believed to have offered to increase the Italy international's wages from 3.5 million pounds to 5.3 million pounds per year.

However, he could run down his current contract or quit his home-town club this summer for higher wages and Champions League football at City if his demands are ignored.

"Manchester City are ready to offer Roma 20.3 million pounds for De Rossi and can give him 7.9 million pounds per annum over four to five years," a source close to Roma told Goal.com. "De Rossi is aware of Mancini's interest and his attempts to bring him to City.

"He wants economic and technical guarantees from Roma for him to stay. If these guarantees are not met he will not sign the new contract.

"At the moment, he is very uncertain as Roma have been lukewarm with him in terms of this new deal. The new owners do not want to take on heavy financial commitments before looking into all the club's accounts."

A new Roma have emerged following the sale of the club by the Sensi family to American investor DiBenedetto, with former Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique now in charge of first team affairs. Nonetheless, it is understood that De Rossi has a clear deadline in mind for his concerns to be met.

"By the end of July this situation should be resolved," the source disclosed. "Now the ball is in Roma's court. They now have a week to give De Rossi the guarantees he wants over the team for the future. They will also have to offer him more money in terms of a new deal."

City are prepared to push for the signing of De Rossi despite the uncertainty over Carlos Tevez's future and ongoing attempts to sign the Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero.
