Netherlands: Mark van Bommel has revealed that he will retire from international football if Netherlands win Euro 2012. The midfielder has made a total of 74 appearances for Oranje since making his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Cyprus in 2000, but will bid farewell to the national team this summer if Netherlands win their first major tournament since Euro 1988.
However, the 35-year-old added that he could go on until the 2014 World Cup if his Dutch side fail to lift the trophy in Poland and Ukraine. "I will definitely retire from international football if we win Euro 2012 this summer. But I'm keeping all options open aside from that," Van Bommel stated to De Telegraaf.
"I might continue playing for two or three more years, and could continue with Oranje as well. I haven't made a final decision about the national team yet, unless we win Euro 2012. I haven't even really thought about it."
Netherlands are pitted against Denmark, Germany and Portugal in Group B of this summer's tournament.
