Even the little-known Argentine, who will replace Tito Vilanova, says he was caught off-guard when the club came calling.
Martino says "I did not expect it." But he also added that the selection filled him with pride.
The 50-year-old Martino says he doesn't know how Barcelona arrived at their decision to hire him "but surely the opinion of (Lionel) Messi and his father had its weight".
Messi says it was a "wonderful surprise that Martino was chosen".
