New Delhi: AC Milan's Brazilian playmaker Kaka was named FIFA's World Player of the Year at a star-studded ceremony in Zurich on Monday.

Kaka became the fifth Brazilian to claim the award since it was introduced by FIFA in 1991.

The 25-year-old won the prize after topping a vote by coaches and captains of 165 national teams with 1,047 votes.

"Tonight is really a special night for me because when I was young I dreamed to become just a professional player for Sao Paulo and play one game for the national team. Just it. But the Bible says "God has got more than what we can think or than we can want", and this is what has happened with my life," the Brazilian said.

Kaka was the chief architect in AC Milan's win at the UEFA Champions League last season.

Barcelona's Argentine forward Lionel Messi was the runner-up with 504 votes, while Manchester United's Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo finished third with 426 votes.

Meanwhile, legendary Brazilian striker Pele was given the FIFA Presidential Award for his lifetime contribution to football.
