How to Take Mirror Pictures with Random Objects
Selfies are a fun, easy way to express yourself, and mirror selfies are pretty popular. If you're looking to spice things up, create an optical illusion by hiding your phone camera out of the mirror’s view. Then, take a selfie while holding something random, which will make it look like you’re taking a picture of yourself with that object. Post your pic online and see if your friends fall for it!
Steps

Setting up the Selfie Illusion

Create a large vertical pile of sturdy objects next to a mirror. Find a mirror in your home that you’d like to use for your selfie. Preferably, look for a room with a lot of open space, so you can tuck your phone out of sight. Take several sturdy objects, like boxes and heavy books, and stack them on top of one another in a vertical column that matches or exceeds your height. Try to set this pile off to the side so it isn’t that noticeable in the mirror. You want the pile to be pretty high so you can take a convincing selfie. If the angle is too high or too low, your selfie won’t look as convincing.

Arrange your phone on the pile so you can take a pic in the mirror. Place your phone on the top of the stacked items so the lens is facing the mirror. Lean your phone against another sturdy object, like a jar or container, so it doesn’t fall over in the middle of the picture. Check that the outer camera is angled towards the mirror so it has a clear view of you holding your random object. Always make sure the lens is facing the mirror, or else your selfie won’t capture correctly.

Stand in front of the mirror and make sure your phone isn't visible. Strike the same pose you plan on taking in your selfie. Is your phone camera successfully tucked out of view, or is it still visible in the corner? If you can still see your phone, try to fiddle around with your phone placement’s until it’s completely out of sight. It might be easier to take your selfie in front of a smaller mirror. You can always crop the photo later on, too.

Pose with a random object in front of the mirror. Pick up a funny object that will really sell the illusion to your friends, which can be something as simple as a remote control, or something as random as a slice of bread or a canister of disinfecting wipes. Hold the object in front of you in the same way you would hold your phone to take a regular mirror selfie.

Capturing and Editing the Photo

Take the picture with a self-timer for an easy option. Open up the camera app and set the timer to 5 or 10 seconds. When you're ready, hit the shutter button to start the timer on your camera. On iPhone, you can set the timer by tapping on the clock icon along the top part of your phone screen. On Android, look for a timer icon along the top of the camera screen, which will be set to “off” by default. Adjust the timer to wait 2, 5, or 10 seconds before taking the picture. You may want to take multiple pictures to really get your rhythm down.

Ask a friend or family member to take the picture if you have trouble. Don’t worry if your picture isn’t coming out perfectly! If the self-timer method isn’t working very well, see if a friend or family member is willing to take the picture instead. Check that they’re standing out of the mirror’s view, then wait for them to snap a few photos.

Apply an extra filter to jazz up the photo. Look through your phone for preset filter options, or use a third-party app to add the finishing touches to your random object selfie. Post the picture on social media or send it to your friends to see how many of them fall for the illusion! Apps like Instagram and Adobe Photoshop Express are great options to consider.
