1 dead, 50 hurt as buses collide

THANJAVUR/ VIRUDHUNAGAR: One person was killed and 50 passengers were severely injured when two buses collided head-on near here on Sunday night.According to Ammapettai police, Ayyappan (38), Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus driver and hailing from Alangudi in Tiruvarur district, was driving a bus, proceeding to Thanjavur from Tiruvarur on Sunday night when a private bus, proceeding to Needamangalam via Mannargudi, coming from the opposite direction lost control and hit the State government bus near the Pulavar Natham Village near Ammapettai.In the impact, 51 passengers from both the buses were grievously injured. The injured were admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. The driver of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus, Ayyappan, died on way to the hospital, the police said.
