New Delhi: Ten Indian Universities have made it to the list of top 100 universities prepared by Times Higher Education BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings.
The inaugural Times Higher Education BRICS and emerging economies Ranking is based on a detailed study of Universities and other higher educational institutions in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa known as BRIC nations and other emerging economies in the world. Of 10 Indian universities in the top 100, 6 are IITs.
Panjab University tops the list of Indian universities and higher educational institutions from India. It is overall ranking is 13. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is at 30th place.
IIT Kanpur has secured the 34th rank. The IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee have shared the 37th rank. Surprisingly IIT Guwahati is at the 46th place, ahead of IIT Madras, which has shared 47th rank with Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
Among the minority institutions Aligarh Muslim University has secured 50th rank while Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is at 57th place.
However, China boasts more top universities than any other emerging economy.
Peking University tops the table, with Tsinghua University (based in Beijing) second. Four of the top 10 and 23 of the top 100 institutions are Chinese. The next best represented countries are Taiwan (21), India (10), Turkey (seven), then South Africa and Thailand (five each).
Although they were considered in the analysis, no universities from Indonesia, Pakistan, Peru or the Philippines made the table, which uses the same methodology as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2013-2014.
Factors considered include scholarly citations, research income and the proportion of foreign students.
The 22 countries analysed are those defined as emerging markets by the FTSE Group's Country Classification.
