1,150th anniversary of Russia celebrated

The 1,150th anniversary of the founding of the Russian state was celebrated in the city. Inaugurating the celebrations, Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma said that Russia has always been a good friend to India.

Russia maintained good relationships with Kerala and the erstwhile Travancore state, he said. A country that was shaped a 1,000 years ago can bring together many cultures.

A unification of languages and cultures is required for the development of a nation. Russia had both. Prosperity is the result of unending toil and able leadership, he said.

The Russian state formally came into being near Novgorod in AD 862 when Rurik brought together feuding provinces.

The friendship forged between the Malankara Orthodox Church of Kerala and the Russian Orthodox Church continues even today, Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church bishop Gabriel Mar Gregorios said. Former ambassador T P Sreenivasan delivered the keynote address.

Russia’s honorary consul in Thiruvananthapuram Ratheesh C Nair was also present.
