TUMKUR: A jeep collided headon with a KSRTC bus killing 16 persons on the spot, including four women, and injuring three others on the BangaloreHonnavar NH206 at Sri Siddhartha Medical College near here on Monday morning.
The victims in the illfated jeep were heading towards Tumkur city, while the KSRTC bus was bound for Shimoga. While the bus driver, Lingaraju, and two passengers sustained minor injuries, the grievously injured Radha, Swamy and Asif were shifted to NIMHANS in Bangalore. However, the driver of the jeep, Sudheer, died on the spot. Another body of a man is yet to be identified, police sources said.

Most of the victims were from villages of Gubbi taluk and were to reach Tumkur city in about 15 minutes.

Sadly, the accident occurred just a furlong away from his house near Heggere. Sudheer's shocked family, including two children (twins), his wife and mother, rushed to the spot on hearing the news.

Tumkur city MLA Sogadu Shivanna, MLC Dr M R Hulinayker, Gubbi MLA S R Srinivas and district JD(S) president H Ningappa visited the spot and consoled the victims in hospital. Later in the evening, District incharge Minister V Somanna and rural MLA Suresh Gowda also visited the hospital.

Being chairman of the regional transport authority, Vishwanath blamed the accident on the illegal operation of private passenger vehicles on NH206. He promised to take appropriate action against this menace.
