Ahmedabad: In the first crackdown against policemen in connection with the hooch tragedy in Gujarat, two constables were arrested for their alleged nexus with bootleggers who had supplied the spurious liquor.
"We have arrested two police constables Ranjit Dabhi and Baldev Rabari," a crime branch official said.
This is the first arrest of policemen in the hooch tragedy which has claimed more than 130 lives.
Police sources alleged the two constables had a nexus with the bootleggers who supplied liquor to Kantodiavass in Majoor Gam area.
Dabhi and Rabari were posted at Kagdapith police station during the hooch tragedy under whose jurisdiction Majoor Gam area falls. They were later transferred, they said.
Dabhi was transferred to Kutch district while Rabari was moved to Ahmedabad rural police.
Both of them were presented before a magistrage who remanded them to seven days police custody.
With the arrest of the two policemen, the total number of people booked for hooch-related cases has risen to 27.
Police arrested people who brewed the spurious liquor, added chemical methanol to it and bootleggers who distributed it to various parts of the city..
