5 dead, 17 injured as speeding car rams into tree

Five people were killed and 17 injured when a passenger vehicle in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree in Ambedkar Nagar on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred when the vehicle, which was on its way from Baskhari to Akbarpur, developed a technical problem. Despite his attempts, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a roadside tree on Akbarpur- Azamgarh road in the Baskhari police station area, SP Sunil Saxena said.

Efforts to identify the victims were on and the injured were taken to a nearby hospitals, police said.

Ambedkar Nagar is about 200 km from state capital Lucknow.
