Jaipur: Rajasthan government has started to crack the whip on police officials involved in allegedly selling the dead body of a 19-year-old man.
Seven police personnel have been chargsheeted for selling the dead body while six others including five sub-inspectors have been removed from active duty.
The Rajasthan Human Rights Commission has also ordered an investigation into the alleged sale of dead bodies in the Sringangnagar district.
The District Collector and the Superintendent of Police have been asked to submit a report on the case by April 5.
The order comes two days after CNN-IBN reported the racket allegedly run by police officials. The sale of dead bodies came to light through an RTI filed by a man who was searching for his dead son.
Rajkumar Soni's 19-year-old son was allegedly sold by police personnel to a medical college a year ago.
"This is a serious issue, we have ordered a probe into it and we expect the reports in three days. Enquiry has been set against the accused police officers, if found guilty strict action will be taken against them," state Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal in Jaipur.
But the Opposition has been alleging that the government is shielding the police personnel and medical colleges involved.
"I accuse the government of shielding the medical college authorities. The senior police officials too are trying to brush it under the carpet," alleged a BJP MLA Om Birla.
An RTI query by Soni had exposed huge irregularities in the way police deal with unidentified bodies.
"They first said they'd cremated my son's body. Then they said they'd given the body to the medical college for experiments to be conducted. They did not give notification in the newspapers," said Soni.
It remains to be seen if the Ashok Gehlot government gives justice to several families like the Sonis who are still groping in the dark.
