Over 800 Congress workers were detained on Tuesday when they tried to gherao Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh's residence in Raipur protesting against hike in power tariff in the state and rise in prices of essential commodities.
Besides, the opposition party demanded Rs 2,100 a quintal minimum support price to farmers for procuring paddy.
AICC Secretary in-charge of Chhattisgarh affairs Bhakt Charandas, MP Tamradhwaj Sahu, state Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel, Leader of Opposition in Assembly T S Singhdeo, former Minister and MLA Satyanarayan Sharma, several legislators and nearly 1,000 party activists were on their way to the CM's residence when they were stopped by the police on GE Road.
Raipur Superintendent of Police OP Pal said a total of 857 Congress workers, including senior party leaders, were taken into custody and later released unconditionally.
Police used force and put up barricades to stop the workers from marching ahead and reaching Singh's house, he said.
Meanwhile, talking to mediapersons Baghel alleged that both the Centre and ruling BJP in Chhattisgarh have failed to control inflation.
Prices of essential commodities are increasing day by day. BJP in Chhattisgarh had promised in its election manifesto to provide Rs 2,100 MSP to farmers for paddy but so far that assurance has not been fulfilled, he said.
