“Muslims will abide by the Supreme Court order on the Babri Masjid issue,” Zafaryab Jilani, member of the AIMPLB, told reporters after an executive committee meeting of the AIMPLB in Lucknow on Sunday.

Lucknow: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has declared that it would abide by the Supreme Court order in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case but will move court if the government decides to bring an ordinance.

“Muslims will abide by the Supreme Court order on the Babri Masjid issue,” Zafaryab Jilani, member of the AIMPLB, told reporters after an executive committee meeting of the AIMPLB in Lucknow on Sunday.

Commenting on the possibility that the Centre might bring an ordinance, Jilani said: “If an ordinance is brought and becomes a law, the AIMPLB will challenge it in Supreme the Court.”

The matter of triple talaq Ordinance was also discussed. It was unanimously decided that if the ordinance on triple talaq becomes law, the AIMPLB will challenge it in Supreme Court.

In August 2017, the Supreme Court had termed instant triple talaq unconstitutional and the Centre brought an ordinance to criminalise it.The Lok Sabha has passed the Bill, but it is yet to be passed in the Rajya Sabha.

“We are in constantly in touch with all the opposition parties and have requested them not to support it,” said Qasim Rasool Ilyas, member of the board.

The head of women wing of AIMPLB, Asma Zehra Sahiba said the board was organising seminars and conventions across the country to create awareness among Muslim women on several issues, including triple talaq.

“We have received a very good response in the seminars. We will also be inviting members of other communities to clear the misconceptions about Sharia. Interestingly, Muslim women have once again clarified that they do not want any kind of interference in personal laws of the Muslims,” she said.
