New Delhi: Alistair Perriera, sentenced to 3-years rigorous imprisonment for mowing down 7 people in Mumbai got bail from the Supreme Court on Monday.
Pereira had filed a petition in Supreme Court challenging the High Court verdict sentencing him to 3 years' rigorous imprisonment. Seven persons, including a pregnant woman and two children were run over on November 12 last year when Pereira driving home with his friends after a late-night party.
Pereira was first convicted by the trial court for rash and negligent driving and sentenced to six months in prison for the November 12, 2006, accident in which seven construction workers were mowed down and eight others were injured.
The HC, which had taken exception to the manner in which the prosecution presented its case before the trial court, had on September 6 held the 21 year-old guilty for a higher offence, falling short of murder, and sentenced him to imprisonment for three years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
Pereira said he had already paid the fine and also a compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh to the kin of victims and sought a reconsideration of the HC order on the ground that he was not drunk while driving and had applied brakes. Pereira is currently lodged in Arthur Road Jail.
