New Delhi: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha on Monday lashed out at the Tamil Nadu government for increasing the price of milk.
The AIADMK chief has asked the government to bear the additional cost of procurement price instead of passing it on to consumers.
In a statement made in Chennai, Jayalalithaa was quoted by news agency PTI as saying when the AIADMK government increased the milk procurement price by one rupee in 2004 to improve the rural economy, it did not pass on the burden to consumers. Both the manufacturers and consumers benefitted from the step.
She added that the hike in milk price would add to the woes of the poor and middle class who were already struggling to cope with rising prices.
She also alleged that the DMK government was deceiving the people with "freebies", while simultaneously increasing the prices of essential commodities.
The state government had increased the price of milk from Rs 12.50 to Rs 13.75 from March 6.
The government had said that Aavin, the government agency for milk products, was operating at a loss of Rs 20 crore per year.
