Chennai: Thousands of AIADMK workers were detained in Tamil Nadu on Thursday when they blocked roads to protest Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s “derogatory” statement about their party chief.
Karunanidhi alleged on Wednesday said that J Jayalalitha might be disqualified from the Assembly, for she had concealed information about her real estate properties during state elections.
AIADMK workers held protests against Karunanidhi and burnt effigies in many places in the state. AIADMK presidium chairperson E Madhusudanan, organising secretary Sulochana Sampath, former ministers D Jayakumar and B Valarmathi were arrested in Chennai when they tried to block roads.
About 2,500 AIADMK workers, including 1,100 women, were arrested in Chennai. Former AIADMK minister K P Anbazhagan and 500 party workers were detained in Dharmapuri.
AIADMK members, including MLA Chenthil Balaji were injured in a police lathicharge in Karoor. A police inspector burnt his legs in Villupuram while stopping agitators from burning copies of Murasoli, the DMK newspaper.
Karunanidhi has alleged Jayalalitha partly owns the Kodanadu Tea Estate Company—on which a huge residence spanning 38,000 sq. ft. has been built in the Nilgiris—on the southern edge of the Western Ghats.
It is obvious that she (Jayalalitha) has hidden the fact about Kodanadu while filing the affidavit (about her assets) during last year's legislative assembly elections,' Karunanidhi said.
'If the ensuing probe proves the allegation to be true, she will not be able to contest elections in future and the post of MLA she holds now will also be rendered invalid.'
