Dejected at being marked "absent" for reporting late on duty, an assistant sub-inspector allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver, police said in Raisen on Wednesday.
The ASI, KS Rajput (52), posted in Sanchi police station in Raisen, had a dispute with the duty officer on the issue of reporting one hour late for his night duty on Tuesday, police said.
The duty office marked him absent, following which the ASI was disappointed and he told the concerned official that in his 26-year-long career he was marked absent for the first time.
After an argument, he discarded his uniform on the police station campus and ran back to his room where he was living alone as his family was staying in Hoshangabad.
Rajput then shot himself on his chest with his service revolver, police said.
As he ran away from the police station, other staff members followed him but by then he had bolted his room from inside.
When they heard the bullet sound, they broke open the door and found Rajput lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a hospital but he succumbed to his injuries enroute.
Raisen District Superintendent of Police K D Sharma said that reporting for the duty is a routine matter and the duty officer did nothing wrong by questioning the ASI on the issue.
A case has been registered in this regard, police said.
