HYDERABAD: The suspense over who would be Hyderabad’s next police commissioner finally came to an end Saturday after the state government confirmed in-charge incumbent Anurag Sharma permanent in the post.Hyderabad thus bids farewell to A K Khan who was its chief sheriff for nearly two and a half years. He has been moved to APSRTC as its vice-chairman and managing director, replacing Prasada Rao who has been shifted as director-general of the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB). These were among several transfers of IPS officers effected by the government on Saturday.Top sources said there had been hectic lobbying for the top cop’s post in Hyderabad for at least a month. The government is said to have come under tremendous pressure from various quarters, each pulling for a nominee of their choice.Among those in the race for the post -- apart from Sharma --were additional DGP (CID) S V Ramana Murthy, Lokendra Sharma (who had been waiting for a posting), N Sambasiva Rao (director APPA) and Sudeep Lakhtakia (presently on deputation with the SPG).Sources said Sharma was picked after one political party put its weight behind him. The 1982 batch IPS officer had been DCP South Zone during the communal clashes that broke out after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992.Sharma was given temporary charge of the city on April 7 when Khan was required to do a mid-career training stint. Before that he had been additional DGP of Greyhounds.
