New Delhi: Arrests are likely on Sunday morning in the liquor baron Ponty Chaddha and his brother Hardeep’s double murder case. Their guards who were allegedly present on the scene were questioned all of Saturday. This includes the six Personal Security Officers attached to them by the Punjab Police and the Delhi Police believe Hardeep fired the first shot killing his brother Ponty and then died in retaliatory firing by Ponty's guard.
The incident took place in their farmhouse in Delhi, a guard too was injured in the firing. On Saturday morning, the brothers went out for a walk within their compound, followed by their guards, they were supposed to sort out differences in their business. At 11:45, the conversation took an ugly turn when Hardeep and his men opened fire at Ponty. Trying to intervene, Ponty's guard opens fire and Hardeep too was shot dead, while the guard sustained injuries.
Hardeep's Lawyer Gaurav Kant said that he spoke to Hardeep at around 12 noon - that Hardeep told him that he had a feeling that he will be thrown out of the farm house and that he called 100 for help. The lawyer also said that property division negotiations were acrimonious but brothers had continued to stay under one roof.
Ponty Chaddha was known to be close to most political parties, his proximity to Mayawati while she was in power in Uttar Pradesh was a well known secret. His links with politicians is what made his meteoric rise even more contentious with his businesses often coming under the scrutiny of the ED and the IT Department, while he survived successive investigations, he failed to protect himself from his own brother in a bitter business rivalry.
While the bodies have been sent for a post-mortem to the AIIMS, the police is now looking to question the injured guard, currently recovering at the hospital. One thing is certain, apart from investigating this case of murder, the police may end up unravelling a lot more about the contentious businessman.
