The Goshree Islands Development  Authority (GIDA) is all set to ink an MoU with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for the  construction of three bridges along the proposed Moolampilly-Chathanad four-lane road. The road is a vital link between the Vallarpadam Container Terminal Road and the NH-17 and is considered to be a step towards the connectivity of the isolated Goshree islands as well as that of the Cochin Port Trust and the Vallarpadam Container Terminal.

The DMRC has completed the paper works on the project.

“The MoU is in the final stages. The draft has already been prepared and sent to the government for approval. Once the approval is given we hope to start the work on the bridges within 45 days,” said District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, who is also the secretary of GIDA.

Meanwhile, the land acquisition is to be done in parallel.

To speed up the process of land acquisition, the district administration has decided to seek the consent of the land owners concerned to facilitate the construction work before the official land acquisition.

“There are only about five land owners and with their consent we hope to begin the work on the bridges and the approach road. Since only a smaall portion of land is to be acquired, the process will not get delayed,” the Collector said.

The 4.5 km-long Moolampilly-Chathanad four-lane road is estimated to cost Rs 97.2 crore. The GIDA had requested the DMRC to take over the construction of the bridges. Following this, the DMRC officials along with its chief E Sreedharan and the MLA and officials from the district administration had visited the islands.

The three bridges to be completed along the 4.5- km-long road includes the Moolampilly-Pizhala bridge (180 metres), Pizhala-Valiya Kadamakkudi bridge (230 metres) and Valiya Kadamakkudi-Chathanad bridge (350 metres). The work of the bridges is proposed to be completed in three years.
