MYSORE: B S Yeddyurappa may have been asked to resign as the chief minister. But he has outscored his rivals within the party and the Opposition, particularly the JD(S), by getting Udupi-Chikmagalur MP D V Sadananda Gowda elected as the BJP Legislature Party leader.
Yeddyurappa ensured his candidate's victory over the Lingayat leader Jagadish Shettar, who had the backing of his rivals Eshwarappa and Ananthkumar, and proved that he is a strong force in the Karnataka BJP unit.Though the embattled former CM was facing strong opposition within the party, he had the temerity to keep the legislators together, imposed conditions on their resignation and marched to the Raj Bhavan along with his supporters, which gave him a psychological edge over his rival faction.

By announcing Sadananda Gowda's candidature for the next CM's post, Yeddyurappa surprised many within the party, as the expectation was that a Veerashaiva candidate would get the key post.

The former CM gained the confidence of Veerashaiva leaders of north Karnataka, including heavyweights Basavaraj Bommai, Umesh Katti and Prabhakar Kore. The Yeddyurappa camp also ensured that no prominent seer intervened in the political developments.

The selection of a Vokkaliga leader would prove to be a thorn in the flesh of the JD(S) in the old Mysore region, causing sleepless nights to H D Deve Gowda.

The LingayatGowdaKuruba axis of the BJP could spoil the party of the beleaguered Congress.
