BANGALORE: President Pratibha Patil on Saturday emphasised on the need to strengthen existing institutional support and bridge gaps in support systems to bring about a second Green Revolution in the country.Delivering the 45th convocation address at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), the President said that the country was yet to realise its full potential of agriculture for the nation's overall development."Ensuring food security and elimination of hunger is a national responsibility. For this, there is a realisation that we now need a second Green Revolution that is evergreen in the country. What does this entail and how to proceed are questions for which we need responses in the nature of concrete work plans with strict implementation schedules," the President elucidated. "A system to monitor weather parameters and making available forecasts to the farmers, by using modern communication tools, will be of great help to them in their decision making."She called for the optimal usage of water resources, while advising the government to implement a comprehensive programme to maintain canals and water bodies.
