Washington: US President George W Bush today said that he and the First Lady are "deeply saddened" by the killings of innocent people in the terrorist attacks in Mumbai and promised to continue to cooperate with India

against the extremists.

"Laura and I are deeply saddened that at least two Americans were killed and others injured in Wednesday's horrific attack in Mumbai," Bush said in a statement.

"We also mourn the great loss of life suffered by so many people from several other countries, and we have the wounded in our thoughts and prayers," he said.

Bush said that his administration had been working with the Indian government and the international community as Indian authorities work to ensure the safety of those still under threat.

"We will continue to cooperate against these extremists who offer nothing but violence and hopelessness," he added.

Bush's statement came after the administration acknowledged that two Americans are known to have died as a result of the attacks with an organisation, the Synchronicity Foundation, in Virginia coming forward to identify the victims, a father and his daughter.

"It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of two of our loved community members -- Alan and Naomi Scherr -- who were tragically killed in the recent events at the Oberoi in Mumbai," the Foundation said in a

statement.
