Chennai: An incident of stone pelting has been reported from Bodhimaya, the Buddhist centre in the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

Four monks were injured in the attack, which took place on Monday night. Window panes were broken and the centre was vandalised in the attack.

"What I have been told that 10-15 people came. An auto driver called me...I live in the neighbourhood...I came here immediately. By then the monks were taken to the hospital. I do not know what exactly happened here," said Kapil Alexander, a local resident.

"Some monks told me that some of the attackers were armed with iron rods. Most of the Monks are Sinhalese, they could not understand the language of the attackers," he added.

Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner Vadivel Krishnamoorthy has not ruled out the fact that the attack could have been related to the recent attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.

"When I heard about the incident, I immediately informed the police authorities. The monks have received the first aid. This has been a very unfortunate incident," said Krishnamoorthy.

On being asked whether this could have been related to the attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, Krishnamoorthy said, "One could only suspect like that, because there is no reason to attack any religious leader".
