Health officials were sent into a tizzy over a cholera scare in the southern parts of the city, as two labourers from a construction site on the Velachery-Tambaram Main Road were brought dead and nine others were hospitalised with complaints of vomiting and diarrhoea on Monday and Tuesday.
The scare comes just over a month after a massive cholera scare hit the city.
Officials of the Chennai Corporation inspected the spot and distributed chlorine tablets in the area.
The two labourers — Sukumar Thudu (21) and Lalchand (24) — had been declared dead on arrival at Chromepet Government Hospital and Royapettah GH respectively on Monday.
A press release from the Corporation on Tuesday evening said the cause of death of the two deceased labourers was still uncertain and would become clear only after autopsies had been performed.
The Corporation has said its inspections at the site have revealed that the water was not contaminated.
However, given the circumstances, the labourers have been administered medication and sanitation drives conducted around the site.
Also, the construction site owner has been ordered to provide basic amenities to the labourers and improve cleanliness at the site within twelve hours.
All 450 labourers — who reportedly hail from Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and Assam — were evacuated from the site and the officials were overseeing a cleanliness drive there
