BANGALORE: T Gopalakrishna of Congress has been elected as the Corporator of Gandhinagar (Ward Number 94). The by-election was held on February 26 and counting of votes was done on Wednesday. BJP’s G Ramachandra stood second, while JD(S) candidate P K Suresh came third. Gopalakrisha polled 6,271 votes, Ramachandra got 4,725 votes and Suresh managed to get 408 votes. The by-election had become a prestigious issue for the three political parties. The Ruling BJP party wanted to retain its seat. However, the Congress won the seat by a big margin. Meanwhile, the AIADMK candidate got 171 votes despite campaigning by two ministers from Tamil Nadu. The counting of votes began at 8 am at a government school in the ward. Only 47 per cent of the total 24,851 voters had voted in the election. The police had made elaborate security arrangements in the ward as a precautionary measure. The by-election was necessitated following the murder of R Nataraj, last year.
